Brooklyn, NY (December 20, 2013) – Coming on the heels of his success at the Cadet World Cup in France, New York Fencing Academy athlete, Romain Cannone, 16, won Gold on Monday in the North American Cup in Dallas, TX.
It has been a great year for Romain Cannone. Last month he qualified to represent France in the prestigious Cadet World Cup where he competed against more than 170 fencers, from 15 countries. He earned Bronze in the individual competition and Silver in the team event. This week Romain competed against 141 fencers to earn Gold, in the North American Cup.
It was a hard start for Romain in the pools, but he confidently defeated his opponents in the direct eliminations. After winning his bouts against Bryn Hammarberg and Morris Boratin, Romain fought Thomas Petrosewicz and won 15-14, taking revenge for his loss against Thomas at the last NAC by the same score. Romain went on to defeat Jason Xu 15-10, and Malcolm Miller 15-7. To make the finals, Romain faced his toughest opponent of the day – Dylan French, the #1 Canadian who won the last NAC. With a close score of 15-14, Romain earned his place on the gold medal strip, where he defeated Charles Horowitz 15-7.
Romain moved to #3 in the US despite the fact that he cannot fence in the Junior Olympics, one of four competitions that gives points in the season. His next goal will be to do well on the European Cadet Circuit in Bratislava, Slovakia in January and after that in Goeteborg, Sweden in February. 2013 has proven to be a remarkable year for Romain Cannone and his coach, Misha Mokretsov, who has been training him since he began fencing in 2008.
