COLLEGE ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congratulations to our high school seniors who will be entering college this fall!

Romain Cannone will attend Sacred Heart University and fence for their Div I team.  Romain started training at age 12 with Coach Misha Mokretsov.  In the last two years, Romain fenced for the French cadet and junior national teams and ranked number 1 in France in juniors and number 3 in the world in cadets.  He won gold medals in the 2015 European Junior Team Championship,  the 2014 Bratislava European Cadet Cup, and the 2014 Virginia Junior North American Cup.  He has been selected to the 2015 French junior world team. Romain is a senior at John Jay High School in Westchester.

Skyler Chin will attend Yale University and fence for their Div I team.  Skyler also began training at age 12 with Coach Misha Mokretsov. In his second season, he reached number 2 in US rankings and earned an A rating. Medals include fifth in the 2014 Junior North American Cup at Summer Nationals, silver in the 2011 Div II National Championships, and bronze in the Y14 National Championships.  Skyler is a top scholar-athlete at Great Neck South on Long Island where he was a 6-time varsity letter winner, Nassau County Champion, and team captain in his junior year.

Romain and Skyler have always been part of NYFA and it’s hard to imagine our club without them. They are among my first generation of athletes who are successful fencers and who always remained loyal and believed in our club when it was very young, with no established results or students.  They are leaders by nature and they’ve demonstrated to our younger fencers that perseverance and consistency in training pay off.  They may have different personal goals, but both have achieved greater accomplishments than merely being the best in the club.  Now they are among the best young fencers in the US that have earned their spots in top colleges.

I’m very proud of Skyler Chin, who, despite the limitations on his training due to injuries and the long distance from our club, managed to earn several national medals including a Junior finalist medal in the largest Summer Nationals NAC, and he got recruited to one of the best colleges in the world – Yale University!  We wish him successful and fun college years as he continues to work hard in pursuit of his future goals, which may include NCAA titles.

Romain Cannone, despite his young age, is already a European Champion and on the road to getting his World title. He has a very challenging schedule due to such high fencing goals he’s established for himself, constantly traveling with very little time for other fun. I remember what it was like on my National team and those years were the most interesting and fun years in my life – seeing different countries and cultures, making friends all over the world and the happiness of victories are precious memories that will stay with me all my life and will inspire me for coaching for many years ahead.  I’m sure Romain will agree that those years were worth every effort! Romain is going to Sacred Heart University which is not too far from our club and will allow him to continue to pursue his fencing goals while getting his degree. I believe you will hear more about his fencing achievements in the next couple of years as he still has two more years in juniors.

I wish both our star fencers good luck and fun in college, and NYFA will always remain their second home!

— Misha

Three thrusts and a parry to Romain Cannone of the New York Fencing Academy and his team for the coupe of a lifetime — winning the junior championship in the men’s epee team event.

Romain, also winner of the individual bronze medal at the Basel World Cup, was selected to compete for France at the European Fencing Championships in Maribor, Slovenia.

It was a dream come true, he claimed.

“It is really the competition everyone wants to go to,” said our pal Romain, who reposted, thrust, and lunged to score eight points, helping his team win 45–41.

Romain used his novice rank to his advantage and showed the Hungarian team just what he could do. He feinted and lunged his way through the match and increased his team’s lead to 31–29. The Hungarian team made a comeback and tied the match, but Romain held his blade and led the team to victory, trouncing the opponents 45–44.

“I just knew my team was going to win,” he boasted.

Congratulations to Romain, who led the French and New York Fencing Academy team to their first ever Junior European title.

Romain Cannone Team Gold European Champs IMG_0512-702x563

BENSONHURST BEAN
MARCH 16, 2015
By Jerry Del Priore

Romain Cannone lives anything but a normal teenage existence. His life revolves around school and fencing, with not much time for anything else.

But Cannone’s hard work and sacrifice paid tremendous dividends when he helped the French National Junior Team beat Hungary for the men’s epee gold medal at the European Championships in Maribor, Slovenia, earlier this month.

“When I got to school that day, people were congratulating me,” says Cannone, 17, noting that friends and family members watched the competition via live stream. “It felt very, very good.”

Cannone, who finshed 17th in individuals, took up the sport at a camp six years ago when his cousin Zoey urged him to give foil fencing a try. He switched to epee – a stiffer, heavier sword – at the recommendation of his mentor,  fencing coach Misha Mokretsov, who has trained numerous nationally recognized fencers through his company New York Fencing Academy (NYFA), located at 2896 West 12th Street in Coney Island.

Mokretsov wasn’t an established coach when he first met Cannone in 2010. In fact, Cannone was among his first generation of students. But as Cannone developed, so did his teacher, who recognized the ability in his budding pupil from the outset.

“He right away showed talent in footwork, and he was creative,” said Mokretsov, a former Ukrainian silver medalist who founded NYFA in 2010. “He wasn’t super athletic at first, but he had the feeling of distance and timing, meaning he knew when someone was in range to attack.”

As one of Mokretzov’s star pupils, Cannone has competed at fencing events all over the country and world – which pulls him away from his studies for weeks at a time. When he arrives home, it’s business as usual, and he works feverishly to make up all the school work he’s missed.

But the young fencer doesn’t mind the sacrifice.

Cannone trains in fencing and overall fitness twice a week in Westchester – where he lives and attends school – and spends spends Fridays and Saturdays in Coney Island, taking private lessons with Mokretsov.

“It’s always a challenge, especially my trips. I just have to warn my teachers a week ahead of time,” the French native explained. “I don’t have a lot of time for slacking off. Some people might say it’s too much, but for me, it’s worth it.”

He has a point considering there are not many adolescents that can say they have visited places such as Virginia, Switzerland, Bratislava, Slovakia, and Estonia, let alone compete on the national and international stage in any sport.

In January, Cannone captured the bronze medal at the Basel Junior World Cup in Switzerland, earning himself the #1 ranking in France’s men’s epee, under-20 category. Last year, he also won the gold at the Cadet World Cup in Slovakia, and ended the season ranked third in the world.

“The winning, the experience, the traveling — I would never get to do that and meet all these people,” he said. “It’s been pretty interesting.”

As for his success, Cannone and his mother Cecile attribute a great deal of it to NYFA and his coach and friend Mokretsov.

“[Mokretsov] is a very dedicated person, loves his passion and knows how to transmit it to his students,” Cecile Cannone said. “But they are actually more than student-teacher to each other; it is a very deep friendship, and he gives great advise to Romain in many aspects of his life.”

What’s next for Cannone? The rising fencer is currently in his last international competition of the season, where he will be competing in the World Championship team event in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on April 1. Next year, he plans on attending Sacred Heart University in Connecticut on a partial fencing scholarship to study business.
